HISTORIA STOWARZYSZENIA
During the early 1950s contact was developing again between Teachers Unions in Europe as they began to work together and
to cooperate for the improvement of conditions but more especially to improve understanding between people from different
cultures and backgrounds. Already in the early part of the 1950s some teachers had realized that they could benefit most
from the longer holidays they enjoyed if they could find a more economical way of traveling to other countries. The
idea of Home Exchange Holidays was born in this realisation. To exchange homes meant that they did not have any Hotel
costs and could live in another home with just the normal costs of living. It would also provide the opportunity to live
in a normal neighbourhood and not only in the developed tourist areas. This would provide the opportunity to learn about
local culture, customs, etc. and to get to know the people.
In 1953 the leaders of the Swiss and Dutch Teacher Unions decided that a Home Exchange System for Holidays should be
formally organized. Mr. A. Lehmann (1953 - 1961), Belp, Switzerland, made contact with Mr. G.J. Beltman (1953 - 1959),
Enter, Netherlands, in 1953 and the organization which would become known as Intervac International was born! These
initial pioneers of the Home Exchange concept were followed in Switzerland by Louis Kessely, Heerbrugg, (1961 - 1965),
Heinrich Niedermann, St. Gallen, (1965 - ), and in Netherlands by Th.Thuijs, Bussum, (1959 - 1960), and Bert Vegter,
Zeist, (1960 - 1977), Roel and Willemien Eissen, Oosterbeek, since November 1977.
Major international development of Intervac began in 1961 which brought the first contact with Great Britain through
Mrs. Ronald Gould, national Union of Teachers. Mr. Lehman wrote to Mr. Vegter at that time: "In London ist jetzt eine
Stelle für alle Länder!"
IN 1961 members were recorded from 6 countries: Switzerland, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, France and Great Britain.
Formal contact was established with Germany in 1965 when Hans Joachim Runge, Ahausen (1965 - 1970) became Organiser.
He was followed by Otto Schiller, Stuttgart, (1971 - 1974) and by Helge Günzler, Musberg, since February 1974.
It is quite noteworthy that in 1963 David Ostroff was establishing his Vacation Exchange Club (VEC) in the United States.
He would make contact with Intervac in 1976 to develop a collaboration that continued until 1984.
In 1967 Hazel and Michael Nayar linked formally with the continental group of Home Exchange Organisers. Hazel and Michael
had for some years been running an organization called Home Exchange Service for Teachers (HEST). Hazel introduced of
giving a name to the International organsiation but due to Danish sensitivities HEST was not considered to be suitable
due tot the fact that it means Horse in Danish! She suggested Inter Vac which combines INTERnational and VACations to
give INTERVAC! Thus the name of Intervac was adopted for use by Organisers in CH, NL, D, and GB (which also included
members Ireland).
IN 1969 initial contact was made with Lucien Mazik, Tour, (1969 - 2001), and with Manuel Ruiz Dona, Melilla. (1969 - 1980).

In 1970 contact began with Sweden through Sten Jansson, Stockholm, with Margarethe and Karl Eric Gemfeldt, Jönköping,
taking over in 1971. They have now been followed as Swedish Organiser by their son Karl Eric Gemfeldt and his wife
Ann-Kristine. 1970 also saw contact with Finland: Mrs. Inkari Uski, Lauritsala, (1970 - 1972), Miss Saara Lahtimäki,
Helsinki, (1972 - 1974), Johanna and Matti PyhäläTuusniami, (1974 - 1978), Hleena Huhtela, Kilmininki, (1978 - ),

used until now. These catalogues were produced 3 times per year. Contact was also made with the USA through Hartzel
Weinstat, New York, ( 1973 - 1975). In 1976 David & Mary Ostroff, founders of Vacation Exchange Club established a
link with Intervac International. This collaboration continued until 1984 when Haines and Morrissette, San Francisco
became Organsiers. These latter were followed by Lori Horne and Paula Jaffe who are current USA Organsiers. In 1973
